Martyr Memorial Stele, or also called Quoc Hoc Memorial Stele is considered a work of architecture which features Hue's traditional beauty, standing in harmony with the whole landscape of Huong river. This stele construction was to commemorate, and honour the heroic French and Vietnamese soldiers in Annam who bravely made supreme sacrifice in the first world war against the Germans. The selection process for the cenotaph's architectural design took place from April 10th to May 3rd, 1920. From 4 entries for the competition, the committee selected the design made by Ton That Sa, lecturer at Ba Cong technical college in Hue, awarding him a prize of 80 dong.
